How to fill out your NLV application forms
A while back I wrote a couple of guides on how to manage the move to Spain: How to apply for the NLV and the basics of setting up your new life in Spain. The thing is, each of our home countries’ consulate requirements are different. My experience was with the Melbourne consulate in Australia, and since only about 0.0001 per cent of applicants come from Australia it wasn’t so useful for soooo many hopeful applicants. There are a few things common to everyone, though, including the three forms we must fill out.
It’s possible that your consulate or BLS will insist on different responses to some of the fields! Check with them, or search online (e.g. in Facebook groups) for the experiences of others from YOUR consulate. Hopefully this guide will get you started, though.
1. Form EX-01 – Solicitud de autorización de residencia temporal no lucrativa
For your initial application, the EX-01 is to be filled out on a printable PDF. (Spanish residents can do EX-01 through an online form because they already have their ID number, which you don’t, so ignore advice to tackle the online version.) Make sure you have the latest version: RD1155/2024, printed at the top. If you have difficulty getting one from your consulate, try this one:
Fill in a separate form for each of you.
SECTION 1
Pasaporte. Your passport number.
N.I.E. Leave blank.
1er Apellido. Surname. There’s also a field for 2er Appelido because Spanish people have two surnames. Leave that one blank.
Nombre. First and middle names.
Sexo. X for non-binary, H for male (hombre), M for woman (mujer).
Fecha de nacimiento. Date of birth in the format DD/MM/YYYY. (Americans take note – abandon your MM/DD system from this point on.)
Lugar. Your city and state.
Nacionalidad. Example: Australiano (for men), Australiana (for women)
Estado civil. Presuming you’re married, tick the second box C (casado)
Nombre del padre. Your father’s full name.
Nombre de la madre. Mother’s full name.
Domicilio en España / Nº / Piso. Leave blank.
Localidad. The city you’re moving to e.g. Jerez de la Frontera.
C.P. Post code. Leave blank.
Provincia. E.g. Cádiz. Look up your city’s province (not the region).
Teléfono móvil. Leave blank, unless you already have a Spanish number.
E-mail. Your preferred contact email.
Representante legal, en su caso / DNI / NIE / PAS / Titulo. Leave blank – this is in case you’re using an agent.
Hijas/os a cargo en edad de escolarización en España. Dependent children of school age. Tick Sí if yes, No if not.
SECTIONS 2, 3 and 4
Leave blank.
SECTION 5
Tick RESIDENCIA INICIAL and Titular de los recursos económicos (you as the primary applicant)
The dotted lines at the end of the form should be filled out like this …
MELBOURNE [the city of your consulate is fine), a 11 de OCTUBRE de 2025 (the current date).
For a bit of flair, Google-Translate the month you’re signing, though it surely won’t matter that it’s in English.

2. Tasa 790-052
This is another form that you can easily be led to through an online portal – but you won’t be able to complete it as a non resident. Find a PDF version. Here’s one.
Ejercicio. The current year.
N.I.F / C.I.F. / N.I.E. Your passport number is fine.
Apellidos y nombre o razón social. Full name.
Nacionalidad. e.g. Australiano (for a man), Australiana (woman).
Provincia. E.g. Cádiz. Leave the other address and telephone fields blank.
Autoliquidación. Tick PRINCIPAL.
Datos de la Autoliquidación Principal si es complementaria. Leave both fields blank.
Tarifa segunda: autorizaciones. In section 1, tick option C: Autorización inicial de residencia temporal.
Declarante. En: City of your consulate, date. Firma: your signature.
Ingreso. Importe euros: Write the amount your consulate tells you to write (don’t listen to anyone else). You can write the current fee, e.g. $488 AUSTRALIANOS
Forma de pago: Tick the first box ‘En efectivo’ (it means in cash, hence the need for a money order – you can’t pay this online).
The next page is identical. Fill it out and sign and date it too.
The third page is virtually the same too, but in the Municipio box we wrote $488 AUSTRALIANOS. The boxes at the end of the page, same as before.
3. Application for long-term visa (solicitud de visado nacional)
This form is in English as well as Spanish, so I don’t need to guide you much and I’ve only listed fields that might be confusing. You’ll need a separate form for each of you. Beware, there seem to be as many versions of this form as there are consulates! So, the sections might not match up depending on from where you got yours, but you should be able to match the info below to the correct section.
Section 19 (Profeción actual / current occupation). Leave it blank. To get a non-lucrative visa you are supposed not to be working, so leaving this blank might prevent the raising of a flag somewhere.
Section 20 (Motivo principal del viaje / Main purpose of the journey). Tick the first box ‘Non-lucrative residence or residence without a labour purpose’.
Section 21 (Fecha de Estrada prvista en Espana / Intended date of entry into Spain). We entered only the month after our application date ‘Noviembre’. Some nominate a specific date in the future, to enable them more control over the entry date.
Section 22 (Numero de entradas solicitado /. Number of entries required). This oncerns whether within the NLV visa validity period you’re likely to leave and enter Spain again after you first arrive. If that’s you, select multiple.
Section 23 (Domicilo postal del solicitante en Espana / Applicant’s address in Spain). The city you’ll be living in – you don’t need a Spanish street address (unless your consulate is ultra pedantic).
Section 26 deals with sponsors. This doesn’t concern most of us.
Sections 27, 28 and 29 aren’t relevant for the NLV. Leave blank.
Section 30 Lugar y fecha (place and date). We wrote Melbourne, 17 de Octubre del 2022.

Make sure your passport photo is glued, not stapled, to the box with a craft glue.
